SmackDown Five-Point Preview: May 31, 2013

Even before winning both the United States and WWE Tag Team Titles at Extreme Rules, The Shield ruled the roost in WWE, dominating opponents and racking up win after impressive win. United States Champion Dean Ambrose, in particular, has shown consistent success in singles competition. CanWWE Tag Team Champions Roman Reigns & Seth Rollins do the same?

Photos of Ambrose claiming gold| Believe in The Shield

From flurried team attacks to devastating one-on-one maneuvers, the “Hounds of Justice” promise to maintain their rule over the yard, which is exactly what they’ll look to do tonight on SmackDown. For the first time ever, all three members of the rogue trio will compete in singles matches on the same night –Ambrose vs. Randy Orton; Rollins vs. Kane and Reigns vs. Daniel Bryan. Will The Shield continue their utter dominance, or will someone show that the team is only as strong as its individual parts?

Revealed last week as the latest “Paul Heyman Guy,” Curtis Axel has been on an incredible roll since his reintroduction to the WWE Universe. Defeating Triple H and WWE Champion John Cena, the third-generation Superstar has made a huge impression on both the WWE Universe and the entire locker room, and with Heyman at his side, one can only guess what’s next for the up-and-coming Superstar.

CM Punk declares he's a “Paul Heyman Guy” | Who is Curtis Axel?

He’ll take his talents to the blue brand tonight against Sin Cara, extremely confident that he can improve on his incredible lineage and build the “brand” that is Curtis Axel all the way to immortality.

We’ve seen it before, but there is once again turmoil in the ranks of Team Hell No, despite how hard Kane is trying to hold things together. In the early days of the notorious tag team, perhaps it was Bryan’s ego that drove a wedge between the submission specialist and The Big Red Monster. But, in a “Hellish” slice of irony, it now it seems Bryan has a bit of an inferiority complex, deeming himself the “weak link” of the struggling duo.

The best of Team Hell No| Is Bryan the "weak link"?

Will Bryan be able to shake this mental block and can Team Hell No turn things around tonight on SmackDown? Find out at 8/7 CT, only on Syfy!

AJ Lee no doubt costBig E Langston a big victory against Alberto Del Rio on Raw. And as World Heavyweight Champion Dolph Ziggler remains on the shelf due to the lingering effects of a concussion, the question must be raised — are the big man and the erratic Diva losing some of their mojo in the absence of The Showoff?

AJ slips up!| Watch Ziggler claim his illustrious title

When he burst onto the scene in WWE, Big E came on like a hurricane, wreaking havoc and leaving destruction in his wake. But after two losses to the No. 1 contender to the World Title, and without the glitter of Ziggler’s title close by, will Langston get back on track?

As WWE.com reported earlier this week, Ryback laid waste to Kofi Kingston during Tuesday’s SmackDown taping, slamming the high-flyer through three separate tables. As a result, the former Intercontinental Champion left the arena donning a precautionary neck brace and via an ambulance.

3. The Shield (Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns) defeated Team Hell No to retain the WWE Tag Team Championships. This one went about twenty minutes. The story was that Daniel Bryan was overly-concerned about proving he isn’t Team Hell No’s weak link to the point of distraction. Bryan was caught with a spear on the outside, distracting Kane long enough for Rollins to hit his springboard knee strike and pick up the win.
4. Fandango defeated Intercontinental Champion Wade Barrett. The Miz was made special guest referee per a WWE FanActive poll. Barrett shoved Miz during the match, causing Miz to come back with a Skull-crushing Finale, allowing Fandango to pin the champion. After the match, Miz attacked Fandango as well.

WWE Payback: Ambulance Match for the WWE Championship

Just one night after their epic Last Man Standing Match at Extreme Rules ended in a No Contest, the rivalry between WWE Champion John Cena and Ryback took yet another explosive turn.
Entering the Raw arena on May 20 behind the wheel of an ambulance, Ryback had plenty to say to the Kansas City crowd. Before he opened his mouth, however, the monstrous Superstar climbed atop the ambulance in a symbolic gesture of dominance. He then launched into a missive delivered to Cena and the WWE Universe, making strong statements about the brutal battle he and the WWE Champion engaged in just one night earlier.
Ryback then set the WWE Universe ablaze when he called out the Cenation leader, telling The Champ that the next time they meet will be at WWE Payback on Sunday, June 16, in an Ambulance Match!
As Ryback made abundantly clear on Raw, Cena may have walked out of Extreme Rules with his title intact, but he didn’t exactly walk out of the pay-per-view. Instead, the Cenation leader was strapped onto a stretcher and carted out of the arena. But he’s been beaten down before, and as the WWE Universe is well aware, Cena doesn’t know how to give anything less than everything he has.
Can the titleholder overcome his ever-hungry foe at WWE Payback? Or will Ryback finally “rule” as the new WWE Champion? Find out on June 16, only on pay-per-view!
